Breast cancer survivors commemorate their journey at 28th annual Hope Garden Celebration

This is the 28th year that Lima Memorial Health System has held its Hope Garden Celebration for survivors and their loved ones who helped them along the way.

This is the 28th year that Lima Memorial Health System has held its Hope Garden Celebration for survivors and their loved ones who helped them along the way. Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith was the keynote speaker for the event and talked about the importance of not waiting to get tests like mammograms.

Echoing that sentiment was former Lima Memorial employee Jenny Hudson. She's a 36-year breast cancer survivor and has become an advocate, urging women to get their mammograms to catch it early because she was lucky when her cancer was diagnosed.

Doctors say breast cancer is treatable, and surviving also means living each day.

"I say definitely get a mammogram. I didn't get a mammogram. When I was hired in and when I went for a physical, the doctor noticed a lump in my breast, and that was 36 years ago," says Ginnie Hudson, a breast cancer survivor.

Doctors say breast cancer is treatable, and surviving also means living each day.

"Stay in the moment and just keep living, because it is very treatable, and I know for patients that have been diagnosed, in the back of their minds sometimes, it is am I going to get it again? Just stay in the moment, just do everything you possibly can to stay healthy, eat right, stress reduction, just take time for yourself," says Dr. Darlene Weyer, LMHS Women's Health Center Director.
