LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Plans for a floating solar field in the City of Lima are getting closer to reality.

The city will be receiving millions of dollars in federal grants for the construction of floating solar panels at Twin Lakes Reservoir.

On Monday night, Lima City Council unanimously voted to accept $2.5 million through two grants from the Department of Energy for the project: one for $500,000 and the other for $2 million. The floating solar panels will help the City of Lima to power the water treatment plant at Twin Lakes Reservoir while saving the taxpayer money.

"The purpose of this project is to power the water treatment plant with solar panels, which will save the taxpayers upwards of a million dollars per year what we currently pay to service that plant. The project is underway. We've contracted with a company by the name of D3Energy, and we're expecting for the project to be complete in 2026," says Mayor Sharetta Smith, City of Lima.
