LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Visitors of all ages explored the prehistoric past at the Allen County Museum during a special National Fossil Day celebration.
Experts from Ohio State Lima partnered with the museum on Saturday to present an afternoon filled with interactive lessons about dinosaurs, their habitats and how fossils help scientists learn about life from millions of years ago. Professor Mark Kleffner, an Earth Sciences professor at Ohio State Lima, led a hands-on presentation about fossils that are significant to northwest Ohio. He said he hopes young attendees will be inspired to dig deeper into science after learning about fossils.
“This is one of the reasons I got into the field I'm in. I really love having an opportunity to share my love and passion for paleontology and fossils with anybody else who's interested, and the chance to do it with children and get them turned on to fossils and possibly even a little bit of science. I think it's the most fun thing I can do,” said Dr. Mark Kleffner, Ohio State Lima Earth Sciences Professor.
Kids also had the chance to dig for their own “dinosaur” fossils and take one home as a keepsake.
