With long periods of heavy ice and snow cover on small bodies of water this winter, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is reminding people that fish kills may be common. ODNR says winterkills occur when persistent ice forms a surface barrier between water and air, preventing circulation of oxygen, and blocking out sunlight. Many of the fish found this spring will be shad, due to their intolerance of long, cold winters.
