He was one of the most powerful voice that the 4th congressional district has ever had. And New Year's Day morning, his wife Pat announced that former Congressman Mike Oxley passed away in his sleep after a long battle with lung cancer. Oxley was elected to congress in a special election in 1981 following the death of Tennyson Guyer. Oxley went on to serve in congress for 25 years. During his time in congress he became the Chairman of the House Financial Service Committee. His name will forever be linked to the corporate reform legislation known as the "Sarbanes-Oxley Act." Oxley also fought hard for the anti-terrorist financing provision in the Patriot Act, which kept work flowing at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, then called the Lima Tank Plant, which named their administration building after him. After his diagnosis of lung cancer, Oxley joined the Lung Cancer Alliance Board of Directors to bring more attention to the disease, giving his insights as a non-smoker. Mike Oxley was 71.
