VAN WERT, OH (WLIO) - The YWCA of Van Wert County held a fundraiser Sunday to support survivors of human trafficking.
The "Black Out Human Trafficking" Glow Bowl at Olympic Lanes had several fun ways to contribute money to the cause. In addition to a portion of bowling proceeds being donated, there was a silent auction and a raffle drawing.
The funds raised by the event will help the YWCA provide emergency services, shelter, and legal and medical advocacy for victims of human trafficking and abuse.
Organizers want people to be aware that human trafficking is a more widespread issue than they think.
"Ohio is 4th in the nation for human trafficking and because we have the 75 corridor and the 70 corridor, we have a lot of traffic that goes through the state of Ohio, on top of labor trafficking and sex trafficking that occurs, that can occur right in someone's hometown," said Julie Schaufelberger, the Outreach Coordinator for the YWCA of Van Wert County.
As well as raising money, organizers hope the event spreads awareness of human trafficking.
