As we move into the warmer months, local law enforcement is asking homeowners to do their part to keep their streets safe for all types of vehicles.
As a part of motorcycle awareness month, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking homeowners to be mindful of their grass clippings when mowing their lawn. It is not illegal for grass debris to be blown onto the roads, but it can pose a real danger for bikers that other motorists do not typically have to worry about.
"The grass clippings on the roadways definitely reduce the amount of braking power," said Sgt. Adam Brincefield, Asst. Post Commander for the Van Wert OSP. "In addition, there's a lot of debris that flies in the motorcyclists face so, I mean, even with safety glasses those grass clippings can fly underneath and cause a real problem."
While there is no criminal law against blowing the clippings on the road, homeowners risk being held responsible in civil court if the clippings contribute to an accident.
