ADA, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio Northern University law students received a firsthand look at the 3rd District Court of Appeals in action as the court traveled to Ada to hear two cases at the Pettit College of Law on Tuesday morning.

One case was a civil matter from Allen County involving two businesses, while the other was a criminal case from Auglaize County. The latter involved Matthew Risch, who appealed his conviction on charges of gross sexual imposition and disseminating matters harmful to a juvenile. Risch was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Judges Juergen Waldick, Mark Miller, and William Zimmerman—all graduates of Ohio Northern University’s law school—expressed their enthusiasm about returning to their alma mater to inspire future lawyers and potential judges.

“Well, it's an honor to be here, certainly. I graduated from here 40 years ago. The thing, the place looks a little different than it did 40 years ago, but it's an honor to be here, and it's kind of exciting to be in front of the students. Having my first day of classes. Forty years ago, I was in the same room here where the oral arguments will be conducted. It's always fun to see students that are at the beginning of their career, and maybe these kinds of experiences will shape them or lead them to the bench or just appellate work altogether,” said Judge Juergen Waldick of Ohio’s 3rd District Court of Appeals.
