LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District is right on target with its archery day camp happening this week, offering kids a chance to learn the basics of archery in a fun and safe environment. Pearl Lewandowski has more on this story.
"We learned how to hold a bow; we learned about all the gear and what it does; how to make it easier to put the arrow in; and how to shoot."
Participants ages 9 to 14 are learning the fundamentals of archery with trained professionals by trying various techniques and arrow types and honing their skills with each session.
Programs like this one are more than just a way to keep kids busy over the summer.
"We teach them principles of how to shoot a bow safely, remove the arrow safely from the target, and then once they get comfortable, we start working on different skills to help improve their precision and aim," explained Anne Smedley, natural resources manager.

"So you stand with the line across here with your bow, grab the arrow, put it against your cheek, and let go," explained Ethan Mailhot, a 2nd-year participant.

The park district offers programs throughout the summer for adults and kids alike.
"We want to make sure that their brains are still stimulated and engaged, and especially with our recreational programs, we want to make sure they're getting their body active. We want to make sure kids have access to education, recreation, and fitness. And if the parents are busy over the summer, a summer camp is a great way to do that," said Lindsey Gallaugher, a naturalist.
