Kindergarten Kamp kicks off

A popular summer program got underway for the ninth year Tuesday morning at two local elementary schools.

The free, five week long Kindergarten Kamp began at both Unity Elementary School and Heritage Elementary School in Lima early this morning. It's a program designed for children entering kindergarten at any local elementary school. Its goal is to help prepare children for kindergarten and the school setting. The program will help children develop socially appropriate classroom skills while learning and doing hands-on projects.

The Kamp is partnership between many groups, including Lima City Schools, the United Way of Greater Lima, the YMCA, Community Action Partnership, and the Allen County Family and Children First Council. It's a program that these groups believe goes a long way.

"It helps with the parents of letting go of their baby, starting school, entering kindergarten, and it helps the students with they have a familiarity with going into a big building, what it's like to go through the lunch line, what it's like to be in a classroom. It gives them a head start and then they can be leaders once they get into the classroom because they already have this part down," commented Kindergarten Kamp Coordinator, Dawn Smith.

The 80 open slots filled up fast, but you can still sign your kids up to be placed on a waiting list in case there are any openings in the coming weeks.
