Liberty Arts Magnet custodians battle the flu

The flu popping up in schools is very common, but how are cleaning crews dealing with it?

At Liberty Arts Magnet, they have an organized system in place to clean every type of room. In partnership with Powell, who supplies the cleaning tools and disinfectants, head custodian Tony Maidon said the process is not complicated. He said all door knobs are a priority, but anything that can be touched by the children, will be cleaned. This is a process that happens every day.

"All the stuff that is touched and everything," said Maidon. "The whole building needs to be done like that every day and most every night. I do what I can in the mornings and I have the guy do it at night."

Maidon said being exposed to so many cases of flu is a big concern for him and other faculty and staff.

"I hate to say it, the kids aren't going to wash their hands, typically," said Dirk Rummel, vice president of sales at Powell. "So whether it's the right chemical for the right strain of influenza, if it's C. Diff, whatever you're trying to battle, make sure you got the right product. Make sure you're using it properly and again the training helps."

Rummel said the stats say one in five don't wash their hands properly and of that, only 30 percent use soap.
