LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A Lima City Councilman is educating the community about how to act appropriately when stopped by the police.
Courtesy of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, 6th ward councilman Derry Glenn has received cards with step-by-step instructions to follow if you get pulled over. Some of the seven recommendations on the card are answering questions without an attitude, following all requests, and keeping your hands visible on the steering wheel. Glenn intends to make the cards available for local schools and nonprofits to educate as many people as possible about the importance of both showing respect to law enforcement and not escalating the situation.
"Some of the things that happen, when you get pulled over, you know you can watch it on TV, you can see some of the things go on when they get pulled over because some people don't know they're not supposed to get out of the car. Or like number one, turn your light on. At nighttime, turn your dashboard light on so they can see when they walk up to your car. You need to be calm," he explained. "Our police officers are out and about and they're doing a great job. They've got to do their job, and we've got to do our job on respect."
If you would like to help fund more cards or help distribute them in the community, you can call Councilman Glenn at (419)-905-9572 to learn more.
