Lima City School District Staff are inspired to bring the joy back into education

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As the staff and teachers in the Lima City School District prepare for their final few months of the school year, they receive words of encouragement and a big thank-you from someone who has walked in their shoes.

Former teacher, author, and speaker Danny Brassell brought his high-energy talk to the school staff as part of their teacher in-service day. Brassell, who taught a variety of ages in Compton, California, drew from his 30 years in education and used humor to inspire teachers as they gear up for the tail end of the school year.

"I've always thought that teaching is like the Peace Corps, the toughest job you'll ever love. It's really grueling, and it stinks on the day to day. It's kind of like a baseball game. You go nine innings and it's 0-0, and you're just totally bored, and then you hit a home run in the ninth inning. It's the same thing with that kid that was difficult all year — the last day of school is crying because they don't want to leave your classroom. That's what it's all about," said Danny Brassell, teacher, author, and professional development speaker.

Brassell aims to help teachers and school staff rediscover the joy in education.

"I want them laughing, happy, smiling, and remind them to take their job seriously, but don't take themselves too seriously, because they aren't. They aren't all that. Neither am I. If you think you're all that, teach kindergarten for a week. Those little ones will set you straight," added Brassell.

Brassell emphasized that teachers need a thank-you now and then to help remind them of the importance of the lives they touch.
