LIMA, Ohio — For many nonprofit organizations, the generosity of donors and community members is what keeps their missions moving forward.
The Northwest Ohio Literacy Council in Lima is asking for community support through its largest fundraiser of the year, “30 Purses in 30 Days,” taking place throughout September. The purse lottery will give participants a chance to win designer purses while helping support literacy services for individuals in the community.
Darrell Ball, executive director of the Northwest Ohio Literacy Council, said fundraising is essential to keeping the organization’s services free for students.
“We do not have anything that we do in our organization that generates income,” Ball said. “So we are completely relying on grants, donations, fundraisers.”
The council also receives an annual stipend from United Way, which Ball said the organization greatly appreciates. However, additional fundraising is necessary to help cover the cost of providing free literacy services. To participate in the “30 Purses in 30 Days” fundraiser, participants can purchase a ticket for $30. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold, and each ticket will have a unique number.
During September, the winning number will be determined each day using the Ohio Lottery Pick 3 straight drawing. If a participant’s ticket number matches the winning number, that person wins the purse designated for that day.
Tickets are available through the Northwest Ohio Literacy Council’s website and at its location at 563 W. Spring St. in Lima. Money raised through the fundraiser will help the council continue providing services designed to improve literacy skills while keeping those services free of charge to students.
