Lima selected to test program that helps turn tenants into homeowners

The City of Lima has been picked to replicate the success of a Detroit program that is turning tenants into homeowners.

The program is called "Make it Home" and Lima was one of 13 municipalities nationwide selected by the Center for Community Progress to see if they can copy the success of the program in Detroit. Other cities that were picked are Atlanta, Louisville, Cleveland, and Milwaukee from a diverse group of applicants. The program takes rental properties that are being foreclosed on and the owner cannot maintain control of and helps the renters purchase them and become homeowners themselves.

“We have been exploring initiatives and trying to come up with fresh ideas for improving the housing stock in Lima and also for promoting home ownership,” says Susan Crotty, Lima’s Dir. of Housing and Neighborhoods. “So, we think this will provide us another tool in the toolbox.”

Lima will be working with the Center for Community Progress to develop its own plan, and hope to have it complete by this fall.
