LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A Lima Senior High School student is being recognized as one of McDonald’s “Black History Makers of Tomorrow.”
Deanna Callahan is one of 14 students across the greater Ohio region selected for the honor in 2026. The program awards $1,000 scholarships to Black senior high school students who are nominated by teachers and administrators for their leadership, character and local impact. Callahan was nominated by her guidance counselor for her compassion and commitment to others.
She is active in Lima Senior’s DECA program and recently helped create and launch an apparel line called “Patch’d,” developing the product from the ground up.
Her team also earned a spot at the national DECA competition this past week.
Callahan says it is her goal to be a leader to her peers.
“It’s important because the youth is a stepping stone. And we're the future. So it starts with us, and to see that we're doing successful things and on the right track ensures that the future will be better.”
The local award was presented by Lewis Family McDonald’s. Leaders say Callahan exemplifies what the program stands for.
“People believe that she's beautiful inside and out, and that she's always giving, always caring, always looking to help and support someone, which is, I mean, those are great values that anyone should have,” said Paul Klepek, director of operations for Lewis Family Restaurants.
After graduation, Deanna plans to attend Clark Atlanta University to study social work.
