LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As the school year comes to a close, educators are eager to ensure that students have access to reading materials over the summer. The Ohio Education Association (OEA) has chosen Lima to host this year’s "A Summer Celebration of Diverse Readers," a large book giveaway event offering a wide range of literature for young readers.

The event will take place in Lima’s Town Square on Thursday, May 22, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., marking the last day of school for Lima City Schools students. It promises to be an afternoon of free books, arts and crafts, snacks, a reader's corner, and other family-friendly activities. The Lima Education Association and retired OEA members have teamed up to make the event possible.

Lyn Sellati, a Lima City School teacher, emphasized the importance of parents engaging in reading with their children.

“They are the most important teachers their kids can have,” Sellati said. “So, any time that they read to them, any time they encourage them to read, they’re setting a wonderful example for their kids that reading is important and it needs to happen.”

The event aims to inspire students to continue reading throughout the summer, providing families with the tools to make reading a fun and accessible part of daily life.
