LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As Heart Health Month comes to a close, dozens of Lima-area women gathered in solidarity to focus on their well-being during the fifth annual Lima Women Have Heart Luncheon.
The event was started by Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith and other like-minded women who wanted to create a space for those living with heart disease, those who know someone affected, or anyone wanting to learn more about the leading cause of death in women.
According to the American Heart Association, 1 in 5 women die from cardiovascular disease. Attendees spent the afternoon discussing their health, hearing from a panel of medical professionals, collecting heart health information and participating in activities designed to get their hearts pumping. Organizers said the goal was to raise awareness and encourage prevention.
“Heart health is very important in the community for women, and there needs to be more done. A lot of times we're left behind and stuff. So it's not done as much as it should be. And it's important for especially black women, because they are diagnosed later,” said Daisy Williamson, a women’s health and wellness coach.
“It's important for ladies to come to events like this, because this offers an opportunity for women to come and learn more about things they should be looking out for, things they could be doing to prevent heart disease and heart failure,” said Aundrea Newman-Waterhouse, a physician and panelist at the event.
“I feel that with women and needing help, heart health is very important to keep your heart healthy,” said Clarine Godsey, who attended in support.
In addition to educational sessions, participants completed a heart-related art therapy project to take home, thanks to ArtSpace Lima. Organizers say they hope the annual luncheon continues to grow and empower women to prioritize their heart health.
