LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - The Olympics may have ended Sunday, but the spirit of the games was alive at Ottawa Metro Park as athletes came to town to compete in the Lima YMCA and Kewpee Triathlon.
If people didn’t want to do the swimming, they could do a dualthon, which started with a two-mile run before the biking and ended with the 5K.
Around 100 people got to see what they were made of in the 40th year of the event, which included a 500-yard swim in Lake Lima, biking 15 miles around the Allen County countryside, and then running a 5K race at Ottawa Metro Park. If people didn’t want to do the swimming, they could do a dualthon, which started with a two-mile run before the biking and ended with the 5K. While most participants did all three legs of the race, some chose to make it a team event and split up the sections of the race among team members. But the event has evolved over the past 40 years to get more people to participate.

“It has changed a little bit over the years. 1st one was a longer traditional triathlon. Now we are trying to get everyone involved. We got families competing against each other and also competing as teams. So, it’s a little shorter on the swim, bike, and run, but it's more doable for everybody in the community. This is a great, fun, healthy, competitive event, and a lot of people come out to cheer their families on,” says Terri Averesch, VP, Lima YMCA.
Besides the triathlon, kids could participate in a one-mile fun run. To learn more about upcoming events at the Lima Y, check out their Facebook page.
