The 57-year-old Husted is a former Ohio House speaker and secretary of state and will serve in the Senate until December 15th, 2026.

"To my friends and supporters and the people across Ohio, we have worked to make Ohio great again, and I look forward to working with President Trump, JD Vance to make America great again," says Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, appointed as the new U.S. senator.

Governor Mike DeWine calls Jon Husted a trusted partner in key decisions in the state.

"I believe and know that Jon is prepared to be the United States senator from the state of Ohio. The U.S. senator rewards hard workers. It rewards those who master the facts. It rewards those who are focused on getting things done," Gov. Mike DeWine.

A special election for the last two years of Vance's six-year term will happen in November 2026, the same election where Ohio voters will be voting on the governor's race.

DeWine's pick of Husted potentially opens the door for others to run for governor.
