LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Whether it is helping expecting mothers, or women with their healthcare needs, midwives are ready to help.
This is National Midwifery Week, and the certified nurse midwives at Lima Memorial Health System are highly trained professionals who work alongside obstetricians to help women live their best lives. When it comes to the experience of pregnancy and childbirth, midwives want to be a part of an expecting mother's story, by helping develop a natural plan to bring their baby into the world.
"We offer alternatives to pain medication, such as we encourage women to get into the tub or get in the shower to help labor," says Jennifer Hermiller, Certified Nurse Midwife at LMHS. "We encourage mobilization during labor and delivery. We want position changes, we incorporate the use of, like, birthing props such as a birthing ball. That helps with pain relief, and it helps with getting the baby in the right position to come down."
One misconception about midwives is that they strictly help mothers with home births.
"When I first told my mom that I wanted to be a Certified Nurse Midwife, she said to me, so that means that you are going to go around and deliver babies in women's' homes. While some home deliveries are attended by nurse midwives, a certified nurse midwife, especially here at Lima Memorial, we do provide in-hospital care. We do collaborate alongside an obstetrician to attend those deliveries."
