ODOT promoting National Work Zone Awareness Week

HANCOCK COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - April 15th through the 19th is "National Work Zone Awareness Week," and officials from the Ohio Department of Transportation want to make sure their employees stay safe while working on the highways.

This year, a crew from Wood County was saved by an attenuator that they were using in a work zone, and ODOT has a message for motorists heading into work zones.

"The main message is, don't ignore advanced warning signs.  You know, we're out there trying to make our roads better for everybody, we all want to go home to our families at the end of the day, so we just ask that you move over and slow down for us," explained Sarah English, Wood County ODOT.

"We have precious human beings like Sarah English out there doing the work of ODOT for the citizens for Ohio who use the system, and we are fortunate to have things like impact attenuators like you see behind us. But it's more important for people to pay attention while they're driving so people aren't injured, that there are not crashes, and people like Sarah can go home to their families," added Jack Marchbanks, director of ODOT.

Wednesday, April 17th, is "Wear Orange Day" to remind everyone to slow down and move over in work zones.
