COLUMBUS, OH (WLIO) - Ohio lawmakers are considering tougher penalties for drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus.

The Ohio House has passed the School Bus Safety Act, which would increase fines for illegally passing a stopped school bus to as much as $1,000. And repeat offenders could have their license suspended and have a fine of two thousand dollars.

The bill also gives school districts the authority to install cameras on buses to catch violators  and create a grant program to help schools pay for safety features on school buses.

The legislation now heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
