The Ohio State University at Lima held their annual 'Field Day' at the Lima Regenerative Agricultural Farm on Wednesday.

A problem Ohio farmers can run into during the dry months of July and August is a lack of water for their crops, so multiple demonstrations were held to show how farmers can improve their drainage systems so they can retain some of that water in a way that helps their yield and the environment.

"What really what we're trying to educate people on is this new mindset where traditionally we have had drainage systems as a way to get rid of water. And now we're looking at a scenario where maybe getting rid of all of that water may or may not be beneficial to us. So why not in the dryer period of the growing season? Why not bank on that water and then make use of that excess water that you would otherwise try to get rid of? And that's what you see behind me is another system that's an irrigation system. So not only will it be retaining water here on the landscape, we have intentions to irrigate that back onto the same field where it came from. So it's kind of a circulatory system on its own, and you have the benefit that where you have the water available for irrigation systems now by allocating just a small amount of acreage on your farm for this kind of a system, which is a drainage water recycling system," said Vinayak Shedekar, state specialist and assistant professor for agriculture water management.

This is the third year for the Field Day event through OSU Lima.
