OTTAWA, Ohio (WLIO) - Junior and senior students from Putnam County schools getting a taste of how money works in the real world.
Superior Credit Union and the Ohio State University Extension Office invited over 400 Putnam County high school students to their Real Money, Real World financial education day at Ottawa-Glandorf High School. The students were assigned a job and a salary and they had to figure out how to spend that money wisely while also paying for living expenses, a car, a home and kids. They also learned about way to reduce some expenses like being active to lower health care costs.
Superior Credit Union, along with the OSU Extension Office, know just how important it is that these students are educated on just how expensive the real world is after graduation.
"A lot of the students enjoy coming to these events; I think it's really eye opening," said Chandler Clarkson, marketing & member experience coordinator for Superior Credit Union. "A lot of them are also really surprised by just how much some of your expenses can cost, especially like child care, housing and auto, so it really adds up. The teachers find this very valuable as well - it fits right into their financial literacy courses. It's really valuable information."
The schools present were Columbus Grove, Continental, Fort Jennings, Kalida, Leipsic, Miller City, Ottoville, Pandora-Gilboa and Ottawa-Glandorf.
