LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The city of Lima and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources teaming up to teach area kids the art of fishing.
Through the ODNR grant program, the annual "Youth Fishing Derby" saw parents teaching their children and kids teaching each other how to fish. Each child was provided bait and a fishing pole to keep. Local organizations and businesses sponsored a variety of prizes to give out to the kids, and the derby is a fun and relaxing way to learn the basics of casting, baiting, and removing a fish from the hook.
'It's good because we need to get youth, parents, and families to come out, whether it's raining or the weather is not so conducive. We want them out and enjoying the outdoors. We've had all kinds of different fish come out of that pond. There's bluegill and bass mainly, but we've actually had some crappie and some sheepsheads come out of that pond."
The fishing derby was sponsored by the Lima Eagle's fraternal order and the masons of Allen County, and they helped provide the fish as well as some prizes.
