LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A local non-profit is accepting donations of different recreational items to help kids have a safe summer.

SAFY is collecting items like sunscreen, pool toys, and chalk for the kids served by their Youth Drop-In Center. Six days a week, kids from ages 12–17 come in all day or for a few hours and enjoy things like reading, video games, and art, or get help through the several weekly support groups available. The program provides a safe but fun way for teens to socialize and improve their mental health.

"The youth that come here, we've really seen them over the years blossom and grow, and we've seen them get better with making connections with people and just becoming more themselves while they're here at the center," explained Megan Shroyer, a skills coach with SAFY of Lima.

Unopened donations can be dropped off at SAFY's office on West Market Street. They're looking for items like sports balls, flip-flops, swim goggles, hygiene products, or school supplies.
