Shoppers in Allen County will pay a little more at the checkout lanes as the sales tax has increased.

The recently passed sales tax for the Allen County Regional Transit Authority goes into effect. In May, voters passed the one-tenth of one percent tax with 74% of the vote. Allen County's sales tax is now at 6.85%. RTA officials say the 10-year tax will raise about 1.4-million dollars annually that will match federal grant money. With this revenue, the Allen County Regional Transit Authority will be able to reintroduce services that had to be cut due to their financial situation.

"In the beginning of 2018, we cut our Saturday service and we cut our evening service as well. We had nine routes and we reduced it down to six routes so we're hoping by the end of 2020 to be able to bring all of that service back," explained Sheila Haney, RTA Executive Director.
While the collection of the levy tax starts today, the RTA will not start receiving the funds until January.
