LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Promotions today at the Lima Police Department, including one that runs in the family.

Lieutenant Zac Leland becomes the department's newest major, following in the law enforcement footsteps of his dad and retired Lima Police Department detective, Scott Leland. The proud papa flew in from Florida to surprise his son, who becomes the department's youngest major at age 35 and now will head up the patrol division.
But Zac says he was raised by a detective, so he put two and two together that dad might be there. Major Leland thanked those who came before him and had some advice for those who would like to follow in his footsteps.
Also on Friday, Sergeant Scott Luedeke was promoted to lieutenant, and patrol officer Darien Gaukin was promoted to sergeant.
"Keep a clear head, don't do things you're not supposed to, keep your nose to the books, and focus. Come do a ride along; it's fun," stated Lt. Zac Leland, Lima Police Department.
Leland's promotion comes as the result of the retirement of Major John Bishop, who hangs up the badge after 31 years with the Lima Police Department. Bishop is excited about retirement but admits today was a bittersweet moment.

"From the time I was a little kid, this is all I ever wanted to do. My father retired from the sheriff's department, and to know that I've fulfilled the career that I wanted, I did everything I wanted to do, and now it's time to maybe relax a little bit," commented retired Major John Bishop, Lima Police Department.
