Shashank Chanamolu was presented with the award by Congressman Jim Jordan Monday morning. The Congressional Award Program was created back in 1979 and is open to people 14 to 24 years old. Shashank completed 400 hours of volunteering at the hospital, with the Lima Area Tennis Association, and with clubs in high school, and also did 400 hours of physical fitness with the Shawnee tennis program. As for his personal development and exploration components for the award, he accompanied his mother back to India to learn more about his heritage.
Shashank will be studying biomedical science when he starts at Ohio State this fall, with the hopes of being a doctor one day.
"First I got to really familiarize myself with the portion of India that I am from. I got to learn about my native language, my family tree, basically. And I love to view a different landscape. I mean, it's like all rice fields, basically where I am from. They're like hills; it's a very nice place. I always like that type of stuff," says Shashank Chanamolu.
"I always say it's appropriate to recognize excellence, recognize achievement. It's great to be here, and presenting that to, just like politicians, we showed up to hand out the award, but we didn't do any of the work. He certainly did, and heading off to Ohio State to continue his education, and we wish him nothing but the best," says Congressman Jordan.
