May 22, 2024, Press Release from Spencerville Local Schools: The Spencerville Board of Education has approved John Zerbe as its new Middle School Principal. Zerbe will replace John Edinger, who is leaving after six years as principal to become a teacher and assistant principal at the West Central Learning Academy.

Zerbe had previously served the Spencerville district for 12 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic director before leaving in 2021-22 to become the assistant principal at St. Marys Memorial High School. He returned to Spencerville as a fourth-grade teacher in 2022-23 before heading to Elida to be an assistant elementary principal this past school year. Zerbe also has teaching experience at Elida, Delphos Jefferson, and Lima Temple Christian.

“We are excited to have Mr. Zerbe return to Spencerville.” says Spencerville Superintendent, Brian Woods. “John left to gain valuable administrative experience and those moves paid off as he stood out among the other candidates with his knowledge and experience. He is a strong instructional leader, and he has the unique ability to create a positive school environment while setting high expectations. He also has a wide range of teaching experiences, having taught ELA, social studies, math, and computer science. This experience will be valuable in leading our staff.”

While Zerbe’s knowledge and experience made him stand out, what really separated him was his passion for Spencerville. Woods continued, “John is the ultimate Bearcat. He loves the school and the community. He is willing to do whatever it takes to help. Even during his time away, he was still around helping however he could whether it be announcing ball games, taking tickets, or timing at track meets. He's all Bearcat, all the time.”

"I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be back home at Spencerville Local Schools. I want to thank the school board, Mr. Woods, and the middle school staff for giving me the opportunity to serve as their principal,” said Zerbe. “I have big shoes to fill as Mr. Edinger did a phenomenal job. Our goal is to continue the positive school culture that has been established. We will work really hard to ensure our students get the very best."
