ST. MARYS, OH (WLIO) - St. Marys City Council approved the language of a renewal income tax levy residents will vote on next year.

St. Marys City Council approves ballot language for income tax renewal levy

It is important to note that this levy will not increase taxes, and it is a renewal levy that happens every 10 years after the original income tax levy passed in 1985.

Currently, St. Marys residents pay an income tax of 1.5%. With this renewal income tax levy, St. Marys voters will decide if they will renew the 1.5% income tax they already pay. It is important to note that this levy will not increase taxes, and it is a renewal levy that happens every 10 years after the original income tax levy passed in 1985. After council, we spoke with the Mayor of St. Marys, Joe Hurlburt Jr., on how the collected tax is used.

"It does not go for any wages, or benefits or investments that the city might have. Basically, it goes to four areas. It goes for police and fire equipment, vehicles, things of that nature. It goes into our streets and our engineering department to develop and construct, and reconstruct new streets. It also goes into our general services and our parks areas that will be able to do things with that to purchase equipment, so it's basically has to do with the safety aspect of the community," says Mayor Joe Hurlburt Jr., City of St. Marys.

The renewal levy will go before voters in the Spring 2025 Primary.
