The threat of freezing pipes arises once again with incoming weather.
Lima Utilities Director Mike Caprella is advising people to take steps to prevent pipes from freezing because it can be an expensive fix. He recommends turning on faucets just slightly to allow water to flow through overnight, especially if it's a pipe on an outside wall. Caprella said to open up cupboards under sinks as well to allow heat to flow in. Be sure to check your windows are closed at home as well as making sure basements and crawl spaces are all sealed up.
"Doesn't take much of that cold wind hitting the water line or your meter then it'll freeze up," said Caprella. "Take the precautions you need be. We've only got a couple days of it, but it's best to be safe, be more proactive then try to fix a line."
Caprella also warns not try and thaw pipes with an open flame.
