LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - Residents around West Central Ohio are helping to defeat Alzheimer’s one step at a time.

Around 180 people walked around Ottawa Metro Park during the annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” event put on by the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The money raised during the walks will help fund research and new treatments that will slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia in the early stages. It will also provide advocacy and other resources for people with the disease. People walked for or in memory of loved ones and caregivers that were impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementia.

Before the West Central Ohio walk began, they had already raised over $19,000, which is nearly half of their goal for the event.

“We have 236,000 Ohioans, just in Ohio, living with the disease. And each of those people living with the disease have at least 2 to 3 caretakers providing their care. So, this is something that pretty much affects everybody in some way or another, and people want to get involved, and they just need to be asked. We just want people to ask their neighbors to donate and ask their neighbors to come walk with them. So, we can spread awareness for the disease and spread awareness of what we do here at the Alzheimer’s Association.” says Danica Basinger, walk manager.
