LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - Doctors from Mercy Health-St. Rita's are combining education with a little bit of exercise to help make everyone healthier.

Walk with a Doc provides education and exercise once a month at the Lima YMCA

The program also gives people the chance to socialize with medical professionals as they talk about a different topic each month.

"Walk with a Doc” goes on at the Lima YMCA once a month to promote physical activity. The program also gives people the chance to socialize with medical professionals as they talk about a different topic each month. This month they discussed exercising in the winter. If it is too cold for you outside, you can find ways to stay active at home or take a class like at the Y. If you are going to exercise outside, doctors recommend you layer up and take your phone just in case an accident happens. Plus, make sure you drink plenty of fluids. When you exercise, it provides not only physical benefits but mental too.

“So mentally, exercising helps release those endorphins, which are the happy hormones, and helps your mind and body stay connected. In terms of how does it help your body, not only does it help your heart rate, help you stay healthy with your heart, but just moving around with all your muscles and keeping good blood flow,” says Dr. Amanda Fernandes, Family Medicine Resident.

If you are looking to get a healthy start to the new year, “Walk with a Doc” is every second Saturday of the month at 9 a.m. It is free and open to the public.
