July 8, 2024, Press Release from the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce: Wapakoneta, OH – The Wapakoneta Summer Moon Festival is back and bigger than ever, marking the 55th anniversary of Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on the moon. From July 16 to July 21, 2024, thousands will gather in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the town’s most famous resident, Neil Armstrong.
This year's festival promises a thrilling lineup of events held at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum and throughout Wapakoneta’s historic downtown district. Festival-goers can enjoy live music, tantalizing offerings from over 20 food trucks, a lively beer garden, and family-friendly games and activities.
"The Wapakoneta Summer Moon Festival is not only a celebration of our hometown hero, Neil Armstrong, but also a testament to the incredible community spirit that unites us all,” said Jackie Martell, Executive Director of the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce. “We invite everyone to join us for an unforgettable week filled with fun, entertainment, and a true sense of togetherness."
Downtown Attractions:
- Live Music: Enjoy performances from talented artists on the big music stage.
- Food Trucks & Beer Garden: Savor a wide variety of delicious food and refreshing beverages from our outdoor vendors and downtown restaurants.
- Family Activities: Participate in fun contests such as the Wiener Dog Races, Corn Hole Tournament, Kid’s Fishing Derby, Cardboard Boat Regatta, Bed Races, RC Fun Run, Firefighter Kiddie Challenge and the ever-popular Car and Antique Tractor Shows.
- The Moon Market: Discover over 60 vendors joining Wapakoneta’s wide variety of downtown retailers in offering boutique clothing, home décor, home goods, and arts, creating a unique shopping experience.
- Local Specials: Local restaurants and shops will join in the fun with special offers and sales throughout the festival days.
Armstrong Air & Space Museum:
- Extended Hours & Special Exhibits: Explore the museum's extended hours and special exhibits dedicated to space exploration.
- Outdoor Activities: On Saturday and Sunday, enjoy inflatable rides, Wright Stuff Rocketeers, an education tent, astronaut appearances, space games, interactive activities, and engaging attractions on the museum lawn.

- Wapakoneta By Moonlight: The festival’s first event offers downtown strolling among luminaria with late night shopping, dining, live music and historical walking tours.
- Run to the Moon: Join the 5K, 10K, and 1 Mile Fun Run, taking participants through Wapakoneta’s charming streets.
- YMCA Pickle Ball Tournament: Test your skills in this exciting competition.
- Summer Moon Festival Scholarship Pageant: Celebrate local talent and scholarship opportunities.
- Meet & Greet special guest, Ohio Astronaut, Carl Walz at the Run to the Moon, downtown festival and at the Armstrong Museum.
- Special Movie Premiere of Cradle of Astronauts and award winning documentary, One Small Visit at the Wapa Theatre with the opportunity to meet the people who inspired these films.
- Lima Area Concert Band: A free, fun, toe-tapping indoor concert ends the festival events at the Performing Arts Center.
