Several homes in Massachusetts had sudden fires break out last week due to gas leaks. So we're finding out from a local expert about what to look for and what to do if you believe there's a gas leak.
Peggy Ehora of Dominion Energy said its hard to see visible signs of a leak but if you smell natural gas, you should always call the gas company. They will come out for free to check the problem. Ehora said gas companies add an odor to natural gas to give it a more distinct smell which she said smells more like a skunk. She also said it's a good time to check gas equipment as summer winds down and we head to fall.
"Because I think that so many people are afraid of you know it costing them money to fix a gas leak, but you have to ask yourself whether that's you know worth your health and your safety to just ignore it and hope something just doesn't happen," explained Ehora.
Ehora added that natural gas equipment can also have other issues if not checked, such as carbon monoxide.
