LIMA, OH (WLIO) - It's a new year and a new building for some students attending the West Ohio Community Action Partnership's head start program.
It's the first day of classes at the new facility on Reese Avenue near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Park. Teachers and children both enjoying the new "digs" and getting down to the business of learning. The program has 15 locations around the region that offers head start and early head start for children from birth to 5 years old. The program offers a variety of elements that are important for their social and cognitive development.
"They're working on all school readiness skills to begin the program year, or begin their educational career. So when they move onto kindergarten, head start has provided them the opportunity to develop those pre-ready skills," said Phyllis Montrose, child services director.
The new building houses 4 head start classes and 2 pre-head start classes. These classes were previously housed in modular units that were outdated. The new facility even has a safe room for emergency needs such as a tornado.
