AAA expects 81 million people nationwide to hit the road this Thanksgiving.
With Memorial Day next week, the unofficial start of summer is upon us — meaning more people will travel by road and air over the coming months. According to AAA, 45.1 million people nationally and 1.7 million Ohioans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 22 and May 26 for the holiday.

AAA wants drivers to practice caution when traveling on highways as they prepare to be with family for the holiday season. The organization is expecting nearly fifty-five million people traveling for Thanksgiving, and with that, patience needs to be the first thing you think of when planning your trip.
Leaders from the Lima-Allen County area gathered in order to urge drivers to practice safe driving habits as traffic is expected to increase due to students returning to school. Last year, 176 pedestrians died from traffic crashes in Ohio, including 14 children.
AAA is projecting that 39.2 million Americans will be traveling more than 50 miles from home for the Memorial Day holiday, which is up nearly 9% from last year and around the same amount of people that hit the road in 2017. Of that amount, one and a half million will be Ohioans and the travel agency sees this as a good sign for a busy travel season.
Optimist member Cindy Nelson explains, “There really is. Actually, new this year we’ve got some different performances. On Friday night the library is going to be out doing a story time. We’re going to be able to be finger printing of the kids and especially this year on Saturday night at 5 o’clock the Lima Area Youth Orchestra is going to be out there performing. So, bring the family and come out for a great night and just real support these kids.”
