DAYTON — New Bremen’s season ended in heartbreak Friday at the Wright State Nutter Center, falling to undefeated Newark Catholic in a five-set Division 6 state semifinal.
The Cardinals rallied early. Mariana Muether tied the opening set with a kill and New Bremen edged a back-and-forth opener that featured nine lead changes, taking set one 26-24. New Bremen built on that momentum in the second set, with Ashtyn Eilerman delivering a big swing at the net and senior Mary Rindler finding a seam to help the Cardinals close out set two, 25-20. Rindler finished the match with 14 kills.
But Newark Catholic answered by winning sets three and four to force a decisive fifth. New Bremen cut into the deficit late in the final set as Muether added to her team-high total — finishing with 17 kills — but Newark Catholic closed it out, taking the fifth set 15-7.
New Bremen finishes the season 25-3.
