ST. HENRY, Ohio (WLIO) — St. Henry senior Morgan Baumer is a standout both on and off the court. From volleyball to basketball and even track and field, she's known for her determination and leadership. And when she's not competing, Morgan is just as focused in the classroom. All that hard work has earned her recognition as WLIO's newest McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
St. Henry volleyball head coach Tricia Rosenbeck said Baumer is a versatile athlete and a leader for her teammates.
"Morgan is one of those athletes who's kind of a jack of all trades. She's a competitor, she's really good at everything that she does and every single year she's been one of our top athletes on the team. So really she has made an impact at a lot of different positions for us," Rosebbeck said.
Whether it's on the volleyball court, the basketball court or even the track, St. Henry senior Morgan Baumer just loves to compete.
"I've been really involved since I was a little kid, like my parents signed me up for all of the young youth athletics and all this stuff and I'm really just a competitive person. And so being involved in all those sports, like rewarding, like I feel like winning is just rewarding for me and that's something that I like thrive off of," Baumer said.
Rosebbeck added, "With Morgan, the growth and development, she's always had that athletic ability and just her accepting like mistakes and knowing they're going to happen and kind of leading the younger kids. She has grown so much, and I am so proud of her and her development."
Morgan's competitive drive goes beyond sports. The senior carries that mindset into the classroom. And it's no surprise she's ranked at the top of her class with a 4.0 GPA.
Her academic success is matched by her work ethic and time management skills, according to engineering and technology teacher Angie Wendel.
"She has amazing time management skills just to manage everything — from the three sports and some of the sports train virtually year-round. I think she is just a wizard at time management and then the work ethic. She just knows like, hey, I have to get this done, so she's very disciplined in that respect," Wendel said.
And after she graduates from St. Henry, Morgan plans to pursue a nursing degree.
"When I was younger, I had a really good experience with a pediatric nurse that I had, and her impact on my life just kind of made me realize that's what I want to do. I want to have that impact on my other kids and I've just always been interested in the medical field. Everything about the anatomy and the biology, it just interests me a lot," she said.
Behind every success is a little support, and Morgan says the help she's received along the way has made a big difference—on the court, in the classroom, and in how she sees herself.
"I think the support from everybody, again, just like helped a lot in growing as an athlete. I think that helped me in the classroom as well because it helped gain my confidence and it helped me feel like I'm on top of this and I think that's something that I'm going to look back on for the rest of my life," Baumer said.
