LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Two of Allen County’s premier boys basketball programs met at Lappin Gymnasium as Shawnee hosted St. John’s in a highly anticipated matchup.
Shawnee entered the night at 7–2, while the Blue Jays came in unbeaten at 9–0. It was Shawnee that struck first in the opening quarter, as Luke Marshall knocked down a pull-up jumper to give the Indians an early edge.
Later in the quarter, Trevick Bertke finished in the paint to keep Shawnee within striking distance before Becket Bertke went to work on the offensive glass. The senior converted an and-one and scored 13 points in the first quarter alone, helping Shawnee take a 24–18 lead after one.
St. John’s responded in the second quarter behind Andrew Elwer. The junior sparked a run with a jumper and followed it up with nine straight points to bring the Blue Jays back within one. Elwer then found Tyce McClain in the corner, and the senior buried the triple to give St. John’s a brief lead.
Shawnee answered before halftime, as Becket Bertke scored again inside. The Findlay commit finished with a game-high 35 points, and the Indians carried a 35–32 advantage into the break.
In the second half, St. John’s turned the momentum for good. Cameron Elwer connected from beyond the arc before attacking the rim for an and-one finish. The Furman commit led the Blue Jays with 28 points as St. John’s outscored Shawnee 53–26 after halftime.
The Blue Jays improved to 10-0 with an 85–61 road win.
