Allen Co. Child Fatality Review Board releases 2010 numbers

The mission, to reduce the number of preventable child deaths by educating the community on the risk factors that contribute to it.

The Allen County Child Fatality Review Board has been doing just that for more than a decade.

The board began officially reviewing cases on January 1, 2001 and have just filed the 2010 child mortality rates. 12 children under the age of 17 died in Allen County, 6 boys and 6 girls.  Seven of those children died within their first year of life.

The board's job is to determine if any of those deaths were preventable and make subsequent recommendations about policy changes or public health or safety issues for Allen County.

Still a major contributor to infant deaths is prenatal care and tobacco use.
