Allen County residents will be seeing an increase on their license plate fees next year.
In a unanimous decision, the Allen County Commissioners approved two separate five dollar vehicle registration permissive tax increases. Lima and Spencerville will only see a five dollar increase as they already had one permissive tax increase put in place in the past. The money from the tax will only go to engineer, construction, and loan payment purposes. The commissioners along with the Allen County Engineer held four public hearings to hear from people. Commissioner Begg said although they had a poor turnout, those that attended did not oppose the taxes.
"One of the things that people wished we had done was either make a higher priority for the portion that was going to the roads or designated certain percentage so after consideration and especially talking with county engineer we felt that this was a way to at least partially address the issue with our roads and bridge infrastructure in Allen County," explained Jay Begg, Allen County Commissioner.
Approximately $741,000 will be generated each year. The taxes go into effect January 2019.
