LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – The Allen County Department of Developmental Disabilities held its annual partnership luncheon, a day dedicated to gratitude and fellowship, recognizing community partners who support individuals with developmental disabilities.

Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities hosts annual partnership luncheon

The event honored organizations and individuals who contribute to making community connections, employment opportunities, and providing essential services. Last year, nearly 1,500 individuals received support, with 133 securing competitive employment in local businesses. Employers who hired individuals with disabilities found them to be valuable team members. Adam Ruiz, general manager at Wings & Rings, praised two of his employees.

“Brianna portions a lot of our food, and it’s more of a portion control job,” Ruiz said. “And then Timmy, he does a really good job with bussing and doing dishes. He keeps the tables clean, and, I mean, that kid buzzes around. He does a really good job.”

Renee Kohler, superintendent of the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities, highlighted the significance of community partnerships.

“We are recognizing various partners in the community, as well as advocates who speak up for themselves and for others,” Kohler said. “Our partners in the community hear the message that the advocates bring, and they work to ensure that Allen County is an inclusive place for everyone.”

The board also honored individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond in assisting individuals with disabilities. Each recipient received an award for their outstanding contributions:

  • Greg Cobb and John Wilt – "I Love My Community" Award

  • Deputy Robert Fisher – Partner in Advocacy

  • Cora Stechschulte – Partner in Service Provision

  • Benchmark Human Services – Partner in Service Provision

  • Leandra Johnson – Partner in the Community

  • Wings & Rings – Partner in Employment

  • Theresa Schnipke – President's Award

  • Jennifer Cunningham – Partner in Education

The event served as a reminder of the vital role community partnerships play in fostering inclusion and opportunity for individuals with developmental disabilities.
