LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - It was a day of gratitude at the Allen County Fair as attention turned to the men and women who have served the nation.
Hundreds of veterans were honored during Veterans Day at the fair with a presentation of the colors, remarks from fellow veteran Denny Glenn, an update on services available through the Allen County Veterans Services Commission and a complimentary lunch.
Men and women representing all branches of the military and multiple years of service attended the event and expressed appreciation for the recognition.
“I love it. I really feel like it's a present to us because we signed up to save this country and they're actually showing their appreciation and recognizing our desire to sacrifice our lives for this country,” said Amanda Rule, a U.S. Army veteran who served at Fort Leonard Wood.
“I really enjoy it. I get a feeling in my heart for the people that really appreciate the services. I served and I was happy to do so. And I hope the younger people also look up to the veterans for having served this great nation of ours,” said Leslie Kubinski, a U.S. Navy veteran.
The event also served as a resource fair, giving veterans an opportunity to learn about dozens of organizations and programs designed to assist them.
Beyond the resources and recognition, the celebration gave veterans an opportunity to gather, talk and reminisce with one another, creating an atmosphere much like a family reunion.
