LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Allen County is ending a long-time partnership with Lucas County for death investigation services.

The Allen County Commissioners voted to terminate their agreement with the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for autopsy services and approved a new contract with Montgomery County. Lucas County has handled autopsies for Allen County for several decades, but the move is seen as a potential cost-saving measure. Lucas County charges a flat yearly fee, while Montgomery County will bill per autopsy case.

“So, it come to us as a recommendation from our county coroner that you wanted to look into the possibility of switching to Montgomery County. This is strictly for financial reasons. There was no determined reasons to move because of service or lack thereof. So a financial decision based on his numbers, is why we decided to go into contract with Montgomery County," said Allen County Commissioner Brian Winegardner.

The new agreement with Montgomery County will take effect in 2026.
