LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Allen County Veterans Service Commission is working to reach as many veterans as possible.
The Lima Kiwanis is learning about what services the veterans commission provides and about a new project they are working on - the Veterans Volunteer Corp. They are looking for people to sign up not only to help at events but to provide one-on-one assistance to veterans that need help getting to appointments or just would like someone to talk with.
"A couple of people mentioned that they want to join the Volunteer Corps because their grandfather was a veteran, and they had such fond memories with it, and they want to continue that on with somebody else, and build that relationship and give back to the veteran community because of that," said Will Thompson, deputy director of the Allen County Veterans Service Commission. "It gives them a sense of purpose being on the Volunteer Corps, and it allows them to provide that mission."
If you are interested in volunteering call the Veterans Service Commission at (419) 223-8522. You will need to fill out an application and there is a background check that will be completed.
