LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - A new arrival to the Mercy Health St. Rita's hospital staff is looking to help expand lung care to the Greater Lima region.

Dr. Katie Capp went through schooling in Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Minnesota before eventually ending up here in Ohio. She is a doctor of pulmonary medicine, meaning that she works with people that are experiencing problems with their respiratory system.

Growing STEM: Technology at Mercy Health-St. Rita's to help patients with lung diseases

"I see patients primarily with lung problems, so anything from asthma to more sort of advanced lung diseases, occupational related lung diseases, lung cancers in a clinic setting," said Dr. Capp. "I see patients in the hospital as well, and do a variety of procedures related to the diagnosis of different lung problems."

A piece of technology that Dr. Capp can use at St. Rita's is the Ion Robot, which can grab nodules as small as a centimeter from a patient's lung for testing. This will allow for potentially quicker detection of lung cancer to help with treatment and recovery times.

Dr. Capp says that she chose to come to St. Rita's because of the opportunity to make a difference for people in our area who may be suffering from something like lung cancer.

"There was such a great opportunity here to really build a program," said Dr. Capp. "In particular, I'm interested in starting a lung nodule program here and helping to improve the lung cancer diagnostics that St. Rita's offers to people in the Greater Lima region. For me, it was just a great opportunity to bring something that wasn't previously offered in such a robust way to this small community."

More information about the Ion Robot can be found here. Details about pulmonary health care is available on Mercy Health's website.
