LAFAYETTE, Ohio (WLIO) — Soup, salad and sandwiches mean more than just a good meal in Lafayette on Election Day. For more than 40 years, the Lafayette Methodist Church has turned the day into an opportunity to serve both food and kindness — raising money for someone in the community in need.
This year, proceeds from the church’s annual fundraiser are going to help Deanna Looney, a single mother battling breast cancer and a 2007 graduate of the Allen East School District. A former classmate nominated Looney as this year’s recipient to help support her ongoing fight.
“This is one of those fundraisers that we always find a really good outpouring of community, community spirit. It's at a great time. I mean, nobody wants to go home and cook lunch after the election, so they come here. There's a couple other things going on in the community today, so nobody has to, has to worry about eating on election day in Lafayette,” said Joel Harris of Lafayette Methodist Church.

“Coming together as a community is huge. The church honestly plays a vital part in that, because right here in Lafayette, we have three churches in the same block, and it's a great outreach, but there's more to it behind the scenes, everyone that comes together to work,” said Carla Oberly, also of Lafayette Methodist Church.
Over the years, the Election Day lunch has helped many Lafayette residents, often providing financial assistance with costly medical expenses.
